Zsolt Bátori: La huerta (The Orchard), part of series, 2019 giclée print, 70 × 100 cm

The work at Martyn Gallery consists of three related series, which show two characteristic faces of the Southern Spanish city of Murcia and its surroundings. Murcia has been surrounded by orchards since the Middle Ages, but the city’s development over the past few decades has resulted in a slow but irreversible change: in both a physical and cultural sense, the city is occupying areas formerly belonging to the orchard. The orchards are still vast and full of vitality, providing many with a living, yet the city is expanding, and the orchards, which have been tended to for centuries, are shrinking. The two different areas also mean different lifestyles, cultures and visual environments. The line between the two keeps shifting, and the presence of one can be felt in the other even when it is not visible.

The three series that comprise the work are La huerta (The Orchard), La ciudad (The City), and La huerta y la ciudad (The Orchard and the City).
