Károly Gink: Hands, 1954, gelatin silver print, 30 x 40 cm

Photographer Károly Gink (1922–2002) was born one hundred years ago and died twenty years ago. The double anniversary provides a good occasion for an overview of his oeuvre. The Hungarian Museum of Photography purchased the artist’s estate from his widow in 2003.

Curated by Zoltán György Fejér, the exhibition presents a broad range of Gink’s photographs. Early works from the beginning of the 1940s are on view, as are prints the artist made from shots he took four decades later.

Slightly departing from the thematic classification employed by previous exhibitions, the curator has placed more emphasis on the books (Ithaca, Európai pillanatok, Lighea) that made Gink a significant artist even by Western European standards. Some of the photographs on show were also included in the artist’s exhibitions in Hamburg in 1967 and Gothenburg in 1986.
